I Tm Joe Pepitone formerly of Ry Georgs Vousy NEW YORK TIMES SERVICE NEW YORK the scar Joe Pepitone never needed much prodding from his older team mates 'He would take off his shirt in the clubhouse and show the red marks on his chest and back where the bullet had entered and where it had departed This was in his early years when the New York Yankees were aging and Joe Pepitone was sup posed to assume the mantle of Mantle but instead played the role of clubhouse comic He liked to display his scar and tell the story of the day he was shot just as he liked to display his collection of wigs His ultimate contribution to his sport was becoming the first player in the history of major league baseball to carry a hair dryer on the road with him in those prehistoric days of the mid 1960s He also liked to show off his latest outfits purchased in elegant boutiques on the road and tell a busload of admiring Yankee team mates: accountant is gonna be He was a baseball bad boy when he walked out of the Yankee clubhouse one day claiming he was to play How innocent it was compared to the bad stuff Pepitone is charged with now On Monday night Pepitone was in a car that was stopped for running a red light in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn The police eventually arrested Pepitone 44 Thomas Carbone 51 and Robert Oates 46 all of Brooklyn and said the car con tained a fully loaded 22 caliber pistol cocaine and heroin worth $70000 on the street some pills more than $8000 in cash drug paraphernalia and note pads con taining names and numbers Con viction on the strongest charge possession would carry a man datory 15 year jail term Joe Pepitone formerly of the the police quoted him as having said when he realized he was about to be arrested The did not protect him just as it did not protect Dennis McLain formerly with the Detroit Tigers McLain the two time Cy Young Award winner was convicted of racketeering and drug dealing last Saturday in Tampa la and a federal judge would not even allow him to stay home on bail until his sentencing When two former baseball stars are in trouble at the same time one convicted the other charged there is a tendency for the casuaL sports fan to want to deny Not Yankee Not a Cy Young Award winner Not an athlete How could two people who played a game for high salaries possibly be involved in such mean pursuits? But the fan who follows sports a bit more closely may have already learned the lesson about idle hero worshipping: there is almost no correlation between athletic ex ploits and high character Sports has the same ratio of heroes and knaves dullards and brain donors homebodies and night owls as the general population Sports neither corrupts nor saves it is merely another venue in a complex world
